A big man with a soft heart.
To the world he was a legend , to his family only a son and a brother.
In this tribute to Joost van der Westhuizen his brother Pieter recounts his life from boyhood to stardom, from his courageous battle with disease to his eventual victory, even though his life came to an end.
Pieter’s best memories of his life with Joost are of their childhood years, when they were “partners in crime” who would never abandon each other. Never.
Then Joost achieved his lifelong ambition to play for the Springboks, and their lives changed. His fame affected them all.
Joost’s battle with motor neuron disease is well known. At first he fought the disease with everything in his power, but then he realised that he might find meaning in his suffering.
All the time his brother Pieter was there- the man who moved in the shadow that Joost cast. He now shares the intimate journey that he travelled as the “quiet brother” until he found his own voice and discovered that he does indeed have something to say.
Joost will for a long time live on in people’s hearts. His legacy will be cherished and continued by his family forever.
